“If at first you don’t succeed; try and try again”
This was certainly the motto for Tanyani Shisana, Brand & Communication Consult for Deloitte Africa and owner of Shudu’s Treats, who led our September masterclass. We were captivated by the story of her life and the opportunity to test our baking skills while making banana bread with her. She shared that her baking started almost by chance. She made some baked goods and realized it was MORE than her family should probably eat; so she took some to work. Her colleagues enjoyed the treats more than she expected and someone mentioned an upcoming event and that she needed a cake. She wanted to hire Tanyani!
Despite having a background in the marketing & branding primarily in the medical and consulting industries, Tanyani accepted the challenge. She immediately began reading, researching, and baking. She shared her baked goods with family, friends, and implored them to give her honest feedback. Through trial and error and a few hiccups along the way, she discovered and helped us understand the science, the STE(A)M, involved with baking. Did you know that the order that you add ingredients matters with your recipe? Do you understand the significance of having certain items like eggs or butter at room temperature? Do you know how to get a “green” banana sweet enough to bake a loaf of banana bread? If you answered no to any of these questions, you’re not alone. Most of us didn’t know these answers either before this masterclass began.
By the end of the session, most of us had a delicious loaf of banana bread, and a new appreciation for cooking and baking. Tanyani also has a special connection to Heritage…she’s been a volunteer & counselor in South Africa since 2017. In addition to sharing her own path to success, she left us with a few takeaways:
Provide a Great Product or Service
Do Your Research
Keep Things Organized
Keep Focus & Have Patience.
Keep Your Overhead to a Minimum
Surround yourself with people who will tell you the truth
Exploring new ideas is exactly what we want to foster and promote at HSCF. Each month we offer a “masterclass” with the opportunities to learn from individuals in the field. If you missed the session, you can find the recipe and video below -AND- be sure to join us next time.
